It was established by a group of individuals who recognized the need to unify the professional activities within the various fields of nuclear science and technology. December 11, 1954, marks the Society's historic beginning at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. ANS has since developed a diverse membership composed of approximately 11,000 engineers, scientists, administrators, and educators representing 1,600 plus corporations, educational institutions, and government agencies. It is governed by four officers and a board of directors elected by the membership.Vision: ANS will be the recognized, credible advocate for advancing and promoting nuclear science and technology.Mission: ANS provides its members with opportunities for professional development. The Black Men in Medicine, serving the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), is committed to the academic success and advancement of underrepresented minority students interested in healthcare professions. In 2013, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) released an alarming report that the number of black men applying to medical school was decreasing. This absence of an increase threatens efforts to effectively address health disparities and excellence in clinical care. As a result, this prompted the organization's creation. The organization accomplishes its mission by equipping black male students with a peer-support network to navigate their undergraduate years (mentoring, shadowing, research, social events, workshops, school visits, and academic assistance) and an associate network of clinicians and researchers to provide invaluable advice and career development direction.

The Brain Exercise Initiative is a student-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that uses math, reading, and writing as an intervention against Alzheimer's disease and to improve cognitive functioning in senior citizens at nursing homes. Japanese neuroscientist, Dr. Ryuta Kawashima, found that simple math exercises and reading aloud for just 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week can have a positive impact on memory for those with Alzheimer's. Many individuals showed improvements in communication and behavior; some even went from being bedridden to sitting in a chair or walking. There are currently over 1,400 care homes with 15,000 Alzheimer's patients across Japan that have implemented programs based on Dr. Kawashima's research with great success. BEI aims to bring this practice of mind exercise through reading, writing, math, and visual and musical art experience to local nursing homes with the help of university student volunteers.
